LAUGHING MOVEMENT’S GOAL IS WORLD PEACE
World Laughter Day is being celebrated May 1st to promote peace around the world. Greater Kansas City will have a fun laughter gathering on Saturday, April 30 at 9:30 AM at Shawnee Mission Park near shelter one. Interested participants of all ages are invited to gather to just laugh for the health of it, joining positive energies with people worldwide.
This laughter session is planned to raise awareness about the Laughter Yoga movement where intentional laughter becomes an exercise, playfully connecting people as they laugh face-to face. Many published studies document the impressive benefits of extended hearty belly laughter for the overall wellness of mind, body and spirit. This practice includes laughing, movement and yoga style deep breathing exercises but might look more like kids playing or a group mime session than any form of traditional yoga. Engaging regularly in laughter exercises is a wonderful opportunity to allow your inner child out to play, even though it may feel weird and unfamiliar at first. First timers regularly declare at the end of a session that they feel uplifted, sore in new places and invigorated.
Laughter Yoga is a wellness practice started in 1995 by Madan Kataria, a medical doctor in India. He established the celebration of World Laughter Day in 1998 on the first Sunday of May around the world. Kataria shares that “The celebration of World Laughter Day is a positive manifestation for world peace and is intended to build up a global consciousness of brotherhood and friendship through laughter.” http://laughteryoga.org/english/events/world_laughter_day

Kansas City to Sizzle with Laughter
April 2016
Intentional belly laughter, done as an exercise, is a health practice with wonderful potential in the Kansas City area, the USA and around the world. People everywhere are discovering this experience of stress-releasing, joy boosting, directed laughter. Laughter yoga sessions give participants the well-documented benefits of stress reduction, better oxygen uptake and a mild cardiovascular workout. Plus, it is just plain fun, and can transform lives.
Laughter Yoga Leader Certification is being offered in Overland Park on May 6-7 by “Laughter Professional”, Ellen Mercer of Oklahoma City. She was first exposed to Laughter Yoga in 2007, at a holistic health fair in Chickasha, OK, where she laughed so hard that tears were flowing. Realizing that regularly practicing these fun belly laughter sessions might improve her health and her joy level, Ellen decided to embrace Laughter Yoga. It has profoundly changed her life and the way she processes challenges.
After attending weekly Laughter Clubs a while Mercer enrolled in a weekend Laughter Yoga Leader certification workshop where she learned the techniques for using laughter as a wellness tool. The class was taught by Oklahoma’s first laughter yogi, a young man who journeyed to Paris, France a year earlier to train directly under the movements’ founder (begun in 1995),Dr. Madan Kataria from India. Ellen began sharing her new skills in the fundamentals of breathing and laughing as an exercise protocol. She was invited to bring laughter moves to groups around Oklahoma; nurses, therapists, physicians, counselors, clowns, court reporters, teachers, hospice staff, social workers, support groups, social clubs, senior groups and students of all ages.
Mercer shared that Kansas City does already have a handful of Laughter Yoga enthusiasts and is ready for more. Those wishing to learn more about this activity might visit the international website www.LaughterYoga.org or find out about local happenings at www.EllenMercer.com
With a degree in nutrition, Ellen Mercer, views laughter as a whole food remedy for body, mind and emotions. Oklahoma’s most experienced Certified Laughter Yoga Leader and Teacher/trainer is planning to certify more people next month in the Omaha area. Mercer was certified as a trainer in 2010 and has since taught 20 workshops to Certify Laughter Yoga Leaders from Oklahoma and surrounding states.
